UpcycledHOME Magazine: Reader’s Spotlight – Kathy Siersma

by | Apr 16, 2022 | Readers Spotlight, UpcycledHOME Magazine

UpcycledHOME Magazine: How long have you been a member of “The UpcycledHOME” community group and a reader of the UpcycledHOME Magazine?
Kathy: Almost two years
UpcycledHOME Magazine: Why did you join “The UpcycledHOME” community group?
Kathy: I was excited to see a group of ‘like minded’ people and couldn’t wait to join!
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s your favourite part of being a member of “The UpcycledHOME” community group?
Kathy: The support everyone gives each other
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What is your favourite upcycling/furniture painting technique?
Kathy: I don’t have a specific technique but I love to use paint to upcycle pieces to update decor and make mismatched pieces work
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What do you enjoy spending your free time doing?
Kathy: I enjoy spending time at our cottage with our family and friends
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What is your current occupation?
Kathy: I’m the owner of Frenchic Canada. We are the Canadian distributors for Frenchic furniture and wall paint. We sell direct online and also wholesale to our many retailers across Canada. It has been great to be able to import it for Canadians.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What do you love most about upcycling?
Kathy: I have UpCycled since I was a young girl. I’ve always love the thrill of finding a piece and making it my own. The quality and uniqueness of the finished piece is second to none. You can’t get that in a new piece.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: How do you define success?
Kathy: Hearing a new customer or retailer tell us how much they love our paint line and knowing it is a product they can be proud to use and/or sell.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: Who inspires you?
Kathy: Many people inspire me. It depends on the area we are talking about. I love talking to business people, creatives and just like minded people. There is always something inspiring to learn from others
UpcycledHOME Magazine: If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose and why?
Kathy: That’s hard to say because mentors come in many forms and teach us things about so many areas of our lives and work. I’ve had the privilege to learn from many talented people.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start upcycling furniture?
Kathy: Truly, ‘just do it’. You can overthink so many things that it can stop you from moving forward. Each time you create, you will learn something and improve.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s one thing — either upcycling-related or not — you learned in the last month?
Kathy: To stay focused on a task and feel the contentment of knowing it is done. When you run a business, you can go in a thousand directions and not do anything well if you don’t stay focused.
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
Kathy: I trained for and ran a half marathon. Haven’t run much since lol
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s the last book you read?
Kathy: I rarely read books anymore although devoured them when I was younger. I read so much online but need to get back to the joy of reading for pleasure!
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What is your favourite hobby?
Kathy: Decorating and painting of course!
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s the first concert you ever attended?
Kathy: Supertramp – Breakfast in America!
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s the next place on your travel bucket list?
Kathy: Would love to go to Greece!
UpcycledHOME Magazine: Are you currently binge-watching any shows?
Kathy: Outlander. Outstanding. Read most of her books but the series is really something
UpcycledHOME Magazine: If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kathy: Sushi
UpcycledHOME Magazine: What’s one item you can’t live without?
Kathy: My iPhone and my head phones.
